Birmingham was founded in 1871, just after the U.S. Civil War, as an industrial enterprise. During the 20th century, the city's economy diversified. Other industries including medicine and biotechnology have risen in stature.  In addition to a reasonable cost of living, there are plenty of attractions, events and other things to do in Birmingham.
